Abstract

This article reports on experiences within two types of professional services catering to families and children: a municipal nursery and a professional babysitting service. The discussion will focus on how the culture of prescription related to childbirth, the dehistoricization and naturalization of the social roles associated with it, critically influence the relationship between families and these services. Establishing settings aimed to suspend the organizational action of these services to think on their cultures enabled to discuss and elaborate emotions that would be differently acted out working with families, to give a meaning at the criticalities in the relationship with clients and stakeholders, and to redefine goals and strategies better oriented to the demands.
